I recently installed Yosemite. I have noticed that I can no longer use the Apple keyboard shortcuts to get special characters like the 'degree' symbol and the 'cents' sign. For years the 'degree' combo has been shift+alt+8 and the 'cents' was shift+alt+4.
As you can see, the '⌥' and '⇧' symbols are on the keyboard, replacing the words 'Option' and 'Shift' entirely. Other countries use these symbols to varying extents. Why this isn't more standardized, we can't say, but it would be nice if Apple put symbols used by the operating system on their physical keyboards everywhere. The Shortcuts app is also available on Apple Watch running watchOS 7 and later. For developer guidance, see SiriKit Shortcuts. Make Shortcuts Widely Available. Providing information about the actions your app supports helps the system offer them to people in various ways.
Also, quote marks and code marks (inches/feet/seconds/minutes) are different depending on the program. Before I was able to use the 'shift', 'option', and 'bracket' keys to get real quote marks anywhere from layout programs to email. Another popular one for me is the 'closing guillemet' which used to be shift+alt+. The result for all of these shortcuts is nothing happens.
Basically, all these shortcuts have disappeared without the user doing any changes to system preferences. I have looked high and low for a solution. Is there a new paradigm we are meant to follow or is it simpler than that. Any help or advice or other threads would be much appreciated.

Edit menu : Emoji's & Symbols. In the Character panel search window, enter male, and the female and male unicode symbols will appear in the center panel. When you double-click on either symbol, it will be inserted at the insertion point in Pages.
There is no special font and key combination to get these symbols. They are members of the Pictographs category found in the left characters panel. You can add this category item from the gear icon, and Customizations… menu.
These characters can be directly entered if you have the Unicode Hex Input selected (System Preferences : Keyboard : Input Sources) from the Finder Input menu in the menu bar, and by pressing option+2642, or option+2640, for male and female symbols respectively.
